Protection
Individuals have a legal status that is defined by national and international laws. This status is the basis on which their protection is ensured in the context of society.
The protection of individuals stands at the crossroads between defense of individual rights and constraints relating to public safety. The national legal status of individuals is reinforced by various elements contained in international law that grant specific rights to individuals in times of disturbance or conflict.
Humanitarian organizations cannot physically interpose themselves between individuals and a source of danger to ensure their safety. They can however monitor the respect for the rules of protection established by international humanitarian law for the benefit of populations in danger.
